Generic domains provide 'constant traffic'

Generic web domain names are likely to bring a "constant flow of traffic" to the websites of small businesses, an internet expert has said.

Domain names such as officesupplies.com or roomdividers.com are said to hugely increase traffic to websites, due to many web users assuming that they will be the definitive site for those goods.

Ron Jackson, editor and publisher of Domain Name Journal, said: "Buyers of premium generic domains have told me that owning a category-killing domain name opened doors that were never open to them before."

"It is like owning a store in the middle of Times Square with a constant flow of traffic passing through the door 24 hours a day."

Mr Jackson also adds that by owning such a domain name, small firms will automatically gain credibility with large companies.

Research by the Confederation of British Industry has found that almost 40% of businesses have found a domain they want being held by someone else.
